The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, presented on Friday March 19, 2021 40 vehicles to the National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO), during a brief ceremony at the Organization’s headquarters in Kanda, Accra .
Vehicles featured include one Toyota Landcruiser, Toyota Camry, Toyota Hiace ambulance, Mercedes Benz rescue ambulance, payloader, five Toyota Landcruiser Prados and 30 Toyota Hilux pickup trucks.
Prior to the ceremony, the government had already distributed motorcycles to the 16 regions and 260 metropolitan, municipal and district secretariats of NADMO.
In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo said that the effective fulfillment of NADMO’s mandate requires that the Organization not only be provided with the necessary staff, but also the necessary number of materials and logistics.
To this end, the President said that, during the month of April, 32 additional vans will be presented to further increase the NADMO fleet, stressing that “this is by no means exhaustive, and I assure the leadership and more NADMO staff in the years to come under my presidency.
To create an effective NADMO, he told the meeting that the Government had taken a number of measures, in accordance with Law 927, to help the Organization fulfill its mandate.
“For the first time in the history of NADMO, a Governing Council, in accordance with the law, has been established to give direction to the functioning of NADMO. Disaster management committees at regional and district levels have been created and made operational, ”he said.
The President continued, “In addition to these, I am pleased to announce that soon I will inaugurate the National Disaster Management Committee to oversee the Government’s efforts in disaster, emergency and disaster management. the performance of other functions, as stipulated in the law. ”
The government is taking all these steps and making these investments because, according to President Akufo-Addo, disaster prevention and mitigation is directly linked to the sustainable development of any nation.
Bush fires, earthquakes
In preparation for the planting season, President Akufo-Addo noted that one of the main concerns the country has faced over the years relates to the cutting and burning of bushes.
He therefore called on our farmers, in all parts of the country, to exercise the utmost caution in the process of preparing their land for the agricultural season, especially in the use of fire.
“The rainy season, with its associated storms, will also bring its own challenges in its wake, and I urge NADMO to prepare with the necessary relief items and come to the aid of those in need and disaster victims,” said the President added.
While the country recorded earthquakes in 2020, President Akufo-Addo noted that the interior and national security ministers have been tasked with forming a committee of experts to assess the readiness of the country. country if such a disaster happened again in the country.
To this end, he indicated that the Minister of the Interior will convene a conference of stakeholders in early April to study his report and draw a roadmap for the implementation of his recommendations. I’ll open the conference.
“During this time, I encourage the leadership of NADMO to liaise with the Ghana Education Service to help incorporate learning topics on earthquake and other disaster protection into curricula at the level. of pre-higher education, and I also encourage the Organization to engage in a campaign of sustained education for the entire population, in this regard, ”he added.
