After it went viral that two students were refused admission to Achimota School for having dreadlocks, Ghanaians reacted on social media.
The former Kumbungu MP, on Facebook, said the school had violated the constitution by not admitting students.
I am told that two brilliant Ghanaian students have had their admission to the prestigious Achimota school withdrawn….

Some Ghanaians, however, have no problem with the school’s decision to keep the student out of school.
Many claim that the school is just enforcing its rules and regulations.
If Achimota doesn’t accept spooky locks n Accra Academy accepts it, the boy should just go. Ebi school rules n regulations. In shs, even if your hair grows, they put scissors in it for you. This no be movie wey ppl dey come do drama biaa he shld cut or chnge sch

But some Ghanaians say it is unfair and “hypocritical” of the school not to admit students because of their hair.
achimota dey allow white children to keep their dema hair, such times then lost rules?
– Hayford Kwesikwaa (@kwesikwaa) March 19, 2021
We all know that Métis children and extremely privileged children were not meant to cut their hair.

What does education have to do with appearance? If we embrace western culture, let’s learn the positive things. I am disappointed with the Achimota school #Ghana
– Kwadwo (@ABetterGhanaian) March 19, 2021
This back-and-forth also prompted Ghanaians to share their concerns about school rules and their experiences.
Honestly, I look back fondly on my time in Achimota // but it’s also because I lied and bribed to get out of everything https://t.co/02T3MsxM2x

just when we believe the country is making positive progress, Achimota is turning down two students for dreadlocks.

If a Rastafarian had been denied admission elsewhere in the West, we would claim chapter and verse that it is racist and reversed and so on. It’s happening here in Achimota and you don’t see the same anger. Who makes these rules ?! #IStandWithRasta pic.twitter.com/15KeNqPgOm

learn and practice inclusion in schools. These draconian colonial rules do not teach young people to live with difference because they are forced to pretend that the difference does not exist. We are not all the same, but we must learn to live together.

Personally, I can understand the consistency argument. But in the end, uniformity to what end? https://t.co/J7sJzU9ogr
– Sage (@Apothecary_Andy) March 19, 2021
So, by our educational construction, a young follower of the traditional African religion who is training to become a priest or fetish priestess cannot attend secondary school? Or do they have to get rid of their hair to do it?
– Kwame (@villag_drunkard) March 19, 2021
And if so, how do you get around that and allow people to keep their hair?
– smiley (@arabaotuaa) March 19, 2021
There are good reasons why we cannot let ultra-religious Ghanaians win. Today they hate the LGBT community. Tomorrow they deny you education because your hairstyle is not Christian. Next week no job for you because you don’t believe in God.
– eMKay fan account (@kwesi_win) March 19, 2021
So is it enough for a Ghanaian citizen to be denied their right to free SHS because of the religious community to which they belong? (Rastafarianism is actually a religious sect)
Isn’t that discrimination? And doesn’t the 1992 Constitution prohibit discrimination?– sheep and wolf clothes (@EboAssiredu) March 19, 2021
Is there a constitutional rule that says shaving a patient’s hair before surgery at a particular site? But you are asking for it to be done. If the patient refuses, the surgery can be canceled. This is Achimota’s code of conduct. Obey or move on. It’s not that hard
– Demba (@Queen_guide) March 19, 2021
They don’t. Have you been to school yourself?
– South African 👑 (@nii_boyee) March 19, 2021
I finished achimota school last year and there was a mixed race person with hair in my class
– the son of sounding (@AfariKwafo) March 19, 2021
Achimota has no right to refuse the two students. Our laws allow for freedom of religion and association. How will their long hair interfere with their studies and school? #AdmitThemNow
– Sawa🇬🇭 (@CitizenSawaJnr) March 19, 2021
Africans will always remain Africans, whites keep their hair etc. but they do a whole bunch of research that helps the world… what does cutting that fear have to do with school? He’s already smart, that’s why he got Achimota SHS.
– Nicholas Credo (@CredoNicholas) March 19, 2021
Achimota has to live with the times. As a former student, I don’t feel them on people who don’t have dreads. Good for Accra Aca.
– Kwame Twumasi (@ktwumasi) March 19, 2021
@NAkufoAddo and we still deny children their right to education because of their dreadlocks is so sad please do something about it the Achimota school is wrong in this matter @AchimotaSchool you are a great shame on our company https://t.co/r4szxAcZeU

Achimota should take their L. I will need a shower after that as Odade3 but I fully support the Academy on this point. This is what enlightenment and progress is.

How I wish these authorities of the Achimota school would be told to go home… they will have no respect for humanity…. all these people call themselves Christians and Muslims God is not peaceful– Odartey Lamptey 1DON (@ odartey19) March 19, 2021
Please I know the Africans in Achimota who are allowed to keep their hair, so that’s no excuse.
– Vincent Amissah (@AmissahVincent) March 19, 2021
So a teacher, principal or CEO can’t be a dreadlock man? Let us step out of our superficial and wise thinking. Hairdressing does not affect intelligence, how did children even manage to get to SHS (Achimota)
– GhBouyKay1🚫 (@GhBouyKay) March 19, 2021
You are outraged that Rastafarians were not allowed to enter Achimota… but I’m sure Muslim girls are not allowed to enter with hijabs either. If you all want to be angry… you should be completely angry and not choose… because it’s hypocritical.
– Le Roy (@kwadjo_lee) March 19, 2021
If these rules did not exist, everything will be allowed at school…. Boys can wear earrings in schools and no one can do anything about them… .. Maybe we need to first understand the reason for the uniformity of some of these things before we condemn them. … 2/2
– Mysterious Man (@Call_me_jewelz) March 19, 2021
If long haired mid-caste ebi like dem will admit that I’m… bullshit for the education system chaw .. primitive thinking .. absurd.
– KING (@mr_dougan) March 19, 2021
Discriminatory rules?
Walk into the school and I’m sure you’ll find a handful of half-caste students with long hair … male and female.
Bro our system is screwed up. No cap!– KING (@mr_dougan) March 19, 2021
Bro .. how do you see that? His fault and the rules must change.
If a white male’s ward is allowed in and entitled to education, why can’t the Blackman take advantage of it? It’s not a race issue, you have to do the right thing. Ghana is far behind we have to wake up– KING (@mr_dougan) March 19, 2021
don’t let me act like I’m surprised by white supremacy and colourism
– #endsarsnow (@KwabenaSB) March 19, 2021
Gentleman stop the long speech. I used to be a teacher, and some of the ladies wore long hair with reports, plus I had an economics student named Rocky who wore locks at a Catholic school but nobody heard of him. Is Achimota a better school than the others?
– 1DESSY (@OneDessy) March 19, 2021
Meanwhile, the Achimota school has yet to respond to the allegations.
