The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) said Ghana may soon start importing unpackaged COVID-19 vaccines in bulk for local businesses to fill into vials.
FDA CEO Delese Mimi Darko said it would likely happen within six months.
She said some Indigenous businesses were in the process of obtaining the necessary documentation and authorization to engage in the process.
President Akufo-Addo has indicated Ghana’s willingness to start manufacturing COVID-19 vaccines.
The government created a committee to formulate a concrete plan for vaccine development and manufacture in Ghana .
While Ghana may not be in a good position to start research and clinical trials in the short term, she said filling vials with the vaccine is more feasible at present.
“We may not be at that end of the drug development cycle, but at least we can start with the filling,” Ms. Darko said. Citi News.
“There is a company that, probably within the next six months, could start filling vaccines into vials and labeling them. You would get most of it from one of these manufacturers, and then you would complete it, you would do the testing and everything, and then you would send the vaccine, ”she explained further.
According to her, Ghana could have up to three companies engaged in the filling process.
“We have also found another business that is up there and the third is about to start… We will be in a good position to start filling and completing the vaccines within the next six months,” Ms. Darko said.
Ghana began its coronavirus vaccination campaign on March 2 with 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca it received from the COVAX global vaccine sharing facility.
