President Akufo-Addo tasked the leadership of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to liaise with his counterpart from the Ghana Education Service (GES) to mainstream disaster management learning themes in pre-tertiary programs.

He also instructed the Organization to embark on a sustained education campaign on disasters in the face of recent recordings of earthquakes in Accra.

President Akufo-Addo made this known on Friday March 19 during a working visit to the Organization, the first for a sitting president of the Fourth Republic.

This is his first official program as President of Ghana since taking office on Thursday January 7th.

He took the opportunity to donate 40 vehicles including a Toyota Land Cruiser, a Toyota Camry, a Toyota Hiace and 30 Toyota Hilux pick-ups to the Organization.

“Over the next month, 32 additional vans will be presented to further expand the NADMO fleet.”

As the country emerges from the dry season and prepares to welcome the rainy season, he said, many farmers will engage in activities that could plunge the country into major disasters.

“I call on our farmers in all parts of the country to be extremely careful in the process of preparing their land for the growing season, especially in the use of fire.”

But President Akufo-Addo urged NADMO to prepare with relief items and come to the aid of those in need, especially during the rainy season.

The President recounted the series of earthquakes and earthquakes that rocked Accra last year, saying it was alarming.

He said that despite the charge of the Interior and National Security ministers to form a committee of experts to assess the country’s preparedness for such events, NADMO must go further in ensuring that protection against earthquakes and other disasters be integrated into school curricula.

“The Minister of the Interior will convene a stakeholder conference in early April to study his report and draw up a roadmap for the implementation of his recommendations.

“During this time, I encourage the leadership of NADMO to liaise with the Ghana Education Service to help integrate learning themes of earthquake and other disaster protection into curricula at the level. of pre-higher education and I encourage the Organization to also embark on a campaign of sustained education for the entire population in this regard.

He assured NADMO of “the government’s continued commitment to provide it with resources to help it fulfill its mandate to citizens to respond quickly and inefficiently in times of distress.”
