New York, March 21 (IANS): Parents, take note. Children with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes are at a 10 times higher risk of complications and death from Covid-19 compared to those with well-controlled diabetes, researchers say, including those of Indian origin.
The study, presented virtually at ENDO 2021, showed that in children with hemoglobin – A1c – above 9%, the risk of complications from Covid-19 was 10 times greater than that of children with A1c level was less than 7%, indicating well-controlled diabetes.
“This study shows that it is more important than ever to control the blood sugar of children with diabetes during the pandemic,” said lead author Manish Raisingani of the University of Arkansas in the United States.
“The findings will help children with type 1 diabetes and their families make better choices about the safety of going to school in person and participating in other in-person activities during this pandemic,” added Raisingani.
For the study, researchers looked at data from about 2,000 children with type 1 diabetes and Covid-19, as well as more than 300,000 children with Covid-19 who did not have type 1 diabetes. 1.

Children with type 1 diabetes and Covid-19 were more likely to die, need an endotracheal tube to help them breathe, develop pneumonia, or develop septic shock, compared to children who had Covid-19 and did not have type-1 diabetes, the team said.
