A Californian company claims to have demonstrated hovering and fast forward precision controlled by a micro-aircraft equipped with a camera that flies like a hummingbird.
Onrovia-based AeroVironment has released a video of the remote-controlled Nano Hummingbird it developed for the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
The artificial hummingbird uses only its two flapping wings for propulsion and control. For the video, an operator flew it outside, then through a door into a building.
The prototype has a wingspan of 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), weighs two-thirds of an ounce, and has a body shaped like a real hummingbird.
AeroVironment was founded by the late Paul MacCready, designer of human-powered flying machine pioneers Gossamer Condor and Gossamer Albatross.
The company also manufactures unmanned military aircraft systems.
