Jungle is back with a happy new single “Keep Moving”, and has announced details of their third album “Loving In Stereo”. Check out the video for the new track below, alongside our chat with the duo.
The group’s return comes on the first anniversary of the announcement of the UK’s first coronavirus lockdown, and although the group did not conceive of it as such. “I turned off my phone halfway last year,” said J Lloyd of the group. NME, but “Keep Moving” fell just in time for the soundtrack of a summer that will hopefully finally see joy returning to our lives.
The comeback single was one of the first tracks written as a follow-up to what would become the new album “Loving In Stereo”.
“We had the hook and it just didn’t want to go away,” Lloyd said. NME. “It was like, ‘God leave me alone for a second!’ But it was so contagious and we kept coming back to it.
A 25 minute version of the track also exists on a hard drive somewhere, which sees the duo playing across the track over and over again in its many forms, a version they expect to see later.
Jungle’s “Loving In Stereo” comes three years after the second album “For Ever” and sees the duo settle comfortably into their skin. While albums one and two saw the band working in a structured model, their third effort sees them dramatically broadening their horizons and blowing the idea that a Jungle song can be wide open.
“I really think these are the most Jungle songs we’ve done,” Lloyd said, with teammate Thomas McFarlane agreeing: “[This album] looks like we’ve always had in mind. If you go back and compare it to the first record, they feel smaller and more introverted. It looks like a whole new level. “
The group’s evolution is most vividly shown on “Truth,” which jumps with sun-drenched melodies reminiscent of the Beach Boys. “It’s as if it was the month of May [Arcade Fire‘s] “The Suburbs,” Lloyd said for comparison, comparing it to the change of pace depicted on the Canadian band’s fiery punk ball. “The month of May” was like, “Oh, isn’t that Arcade Fire? What are they doing? Lloyd added. “And then he slowly channels that energy back to him, and it works.” This song was a bit of a trap that we wanted to put on the album. Can’t wait to piss off some Jungle fans with this.
The new album sees the pair inviting guest singers for the first time, with Swiss-Tamil artist Priya Ragu adding vocals on “Goodbye My Love” and American rapper Bas adding new textures on “Romeo.” “We ask ourselves these questions,” McFarlane added of the prospect of a larger collaboration, “Can we put the voices of others on our tracks?” The answer, when she came, was definitive: “Of course we can. We’re fucking music producers.
“Loving In Stereo” also sees the duo breaking with the rigid structures they had used for the creation of their first two albums. “We walked into The Church studio in London,” McFarlane explained, “which for us is a big step because we are the ones who open up. The pressure is on because you only have one week, and you have string sections coming up, you have all these parts. It’s a bit chaotic and magical, and I think that’s why there’s this energy in the record – everything just went up a level.
Reflecting on 2018’s “ For Ever ”, the band described the album as a halfway point between where they came from when they debuted and where they wanted to go in the future, all while being terrified of losing. the fans they had signaled with. first hits like “Time” and “Busy Earnin”.
“The first one [album] was like a plan for something, ”Lloyd explained,“ and then the second was like trying to do something new without giving up too much on the first. Then this third is the realization of all that we have tried to do.
Reflecting on the “naive blindness” of their reaction to their early success, Lloyd said, “We thought, ‘We’re really good.’ We were thinking of doing Beyoncé tracks with ‘Busy Earnin’. It’s, like, delusional. “No one can stop us,” they said to each other.
“At this point we are the best group in the world on our own. Then with the second album, it was a matter of “How not to lose everyone? And then this third album? I don’t think we can doubt a lead on this.
