The Minister of Public Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, as part of his working tour, visited various drainage sites in Accra to assess the drainage works undertaken by the ministry.
The sites included the Odaw-Onyasia Confluence at Caprice, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle Project, the Upper and Lower Korle Lagoons. Mr. Dredge Masters is currently undertaking the dredging of the Odaw Drain from Caprice to the Outfall, including the lower and upper lagoons.
Other sites visited by the Minister included the Santa Maria Drainage Project site and the Apenkwa Drainage Project site, among others.
As a result of the increased cases of flooding, especially in the capital, the government has committed over the past four (4) years a significant amount of resources in the dredging works and the provision of drainage, which led to a massive reduction in flooding.
While assuring the public that the government will continue to implement programs to mitigate the effects of flooding in the country, Mr. Asenso-Boakye also urged Ghanaians to adhere to proper solid waste disposal practices, which is one of the main causes of flooding in the country. .
“I am impressed with the work done so far by Dredge Masters and the other entrepreneurs. I expect that we, as citizens, will provide them with the necessary support by adopting proper sanitation practices to end the perpetual flooding, especially in Accra, ”he said.
The minister also instructed various assemblies to strictly enforce planning laws and building regulations and ensure that structures are not built on waterways.
He ensured the ministry’s continued collaboration with the ministries of sanitation and water resources and local government, decentralization and rural development to deepen education on solid waste management. He also urged the media to also use his platform to educate and raise awareness not to dump solid waste into our drainage canals, but rather to adopt appropriate solid waste disposal measures to support the efforts of the government. government.
