The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel Abu Jinapor, paid a working visit to the Forestry Commission to mark the International Day of Forests.
After holding a meeting with the Director General, Mr. John Allotey, and the management of the Forestry Commission, the Minister ordered no further issuance of mining permits in forest reserves, except in exceptional circumstances.
He further ordered the Commission to take prompt action to eliminate without a permit the persons and entities engaged in mining in the forest reserves and not to issue new permits.
“Forest reserves are what they are and should be protected accordingly,” said Mr. Jinapor.
He said the government was counting on the Forestry Commission to work with security officials to enforce the directive without fear or favor.
Mr. Jinapor made the announcement by launching the “Green Ghana Project” in Accra as part of the activities marking the International Day of Forests, which fell on Sunday March 21, and planting mahogany and rosewood as part of the launch.
He said there were still illegalities in the forestry sector and instructed the Commission to adopt a comprehensive strategy to deal with such activities such as rosewood harvesting and illegal logging.
