The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), in partnership with the Ghana Visual Artists Association (GAVA), launched World Art Day 2021, dubbed: “Reimagining the Future of Ghana Artistically”.
Mr. Mohammed Adjei Sowah, Director General of Metropolitan Accra, said at the launch that the Assembly is committed to ensuring that art thrives in the city.
He said that art contributes to the economic growth of a city, hence his interest in ensuring that the Assembly focuses not only on traders, building permits and school infrastructure, but also on promotion of the arts.
“You cannot say that our attention has been monotonous on traders, building permits and only education, but art contributes a lot to the economy of Accra …” he said. .
Mr Sowah said that the “Accra for Arts” initiative was about making the city a creative city in which everyone had space, confidence and something to do or contribute.
Nana Otuo Otuoahene Acheampong, President of GAVA, said the arts deserve to be celebrated because they provoke, inform and challenge the visual representation of ideas, as well as the artists’ relentless efforts and active collaborations to reinvent the future of the arts. Nana Otuahene Acheampong, who highlighted World Art Day activities, scheduled for April 15, 2021, said there will be outdoor gatherings, culture, artistic expression in the main street of ‘Accra and an art exhibition on the forecourt of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.
UNESCO National Representative Karl Ampah praised the Accra metropolitan ruler for his keen interest in art and his efforts to make Accra a creative city.
He urged him to encourage young people to create more works of art that would allow them to generate income and stimulate the economic development of the Metropolis.
He said that 2021 had been declared “Year of Arts, Culture and Heritage by the African Union” and “International Year of the Creative Economy for Sustainable Development” by the United Nations Development Conference formed.
Madam Edna Nyame, Executive Director of the National Culture Commission, said that art is an important part of promoting the country’s culture and generating income.
“… As Ghanaians or artists, we can attract tourists if we have fine art to show and exhibit, because tourists come to our country to get a feel for our history and our artifacts,” he said. she declared.
Madame Nyame called on artists to take a keen interest in the creation of arts likely to attract local and international patronage.
