Nepalese authorities have announced the easing of travel restrictions as part of plans to boost tourism.
They claimed tourists arriving in Nepal would no longer be quarantined if they tested negative for Covid-19 upon arrival.
It comes at the height of the annual spring climbing season.
Previously, visitors had to undergo a week-long quarantine at their hotel and wait until day five for a Covid-19 test.
“Now they can take tests as soon as they arrive here,” said Prem Subedi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoCTCA). He said those who tested negative for the virus could continue their travels; otherwise – if they test positive – they must stay at their hotel until they are recovered.
Before flying to Nepal, visitors are still required to show proof of negative results from a coronavirus test performed within 72 hours of boarding, or proof that they have received a Covid vaccine. -19.
The new rules aim to attract more visitors during the spring season, especially hikers and climbers who travel to some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest.
