The battle to sign Erling Haaland is an exciting one – Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea should all be in the running.
They will also face competition beyond the Premier League, with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich also saying they are attached to the Borussia Dortmund star.
Some have observed that Haaland’s father Alf-Inge might advise his son to join City, after playing for Manchester’s blue side – and was at the end of that infamous horror tackle from the legend of the Red Devils Roy Keane.
But Haaland Snr, who has also played for Leeds, certainly doesn’t seem to blame United, based on his recent comments.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made Haaland their priority signing in this summer’s transfer window, according to the Manchester Evening News.
And Alf-Inge underlined his respect for the Premier League giants when asked about transfer speculation in January.
“Manchester United have been very successful in recent years,” he told German broadcaster Sport1.
“The club is also trying to build something new there. But making a comparison now is not that easy as he (Erling) already plays for Dortmund.
“They are two very traditional clubs with a great fan base and a glorious history. Man United are a very proud club, as is Dortmund in Germany.
The £ 18million Dortmund paid for Haaland last January seems like a bargain, with the Bundesliga club set to demand more than £ 100million to let him go this summer, after his 49 goals in 49 games for the club .
United were of course keen to sign him after his Champions League exploits for Red Bull Salzburg but withdrew from the talks.
After his son joined Dortmund instead, Alf-Inge said in March last year: “You never know how it would be at other clubs.
“It might have been nice too if we had chosen a different route. We will never get an answer to that. But we’re very happy with the clubs he’s been at. “
Solskjaer said he was still in contact with Haaland after their days together at Norwegian club Molde – and was seen as a potential factor in United’s favor in the race to sign the 20-year-old.
But Haaland Snr said last year that the whole club package is much more important than who the manager is.
“You have to go to a club where the whole club wants you, not just the coach,” he said.
“I think that’s the most important thing besides the way the club has been over the past five or 10 years and the direction it has taken.

“Because it’s dangerous to just sign for a manager, because he can suddenly be sacked.”
This turned out to be the case in Dortmund, who parted ways with Lucien Favre in December. Haaland is now coached by Edin Terzic, who is in charge until Marco Rose takes over this summer.
But it remains to be seen who will be Haaland’s next manager, as the football world holds its breath.
