Diogo Jota took center stage for Portugal in what turned out to be a rather controversial night against Serbia on Saturday night.
The Liverpool forward secured the departure of his national team in the World Cup qualifiers, having been excluded from his previous game against Azerbaijan.
Jota has been in top form for the Reds this season in his debut campaign on Merseyside, scoring 10 goals in all competitions, despite being out of almost three months of action due to a knee injury.
In his first outing for Portugal since November, Jota scored two goals as his country were held to a 2-2 draw with Serbia to bring their total for the Selecao to five goals in just 11 caps.
Second-half strikes by Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic saved a draw for the home side in Belgrade, but there was to be some controversy in the dying moments of the game.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo believed he won the game when his effort, on closer inspection, seemed to cross the finish line in stoppage time.
However, the draw had no goal line technology, so no goals were awarded, although it was clear the ball had crossed the line.
Ronaldo couldn’t hide his frustration with the decision not to award a goal and showed his anger by leaving the pitch moments before the full-time whistle, throwing his captain’s armband to the ground as he left the pitch. ‘did.
After the match, Ronaldo posted a message to the supporters on Instagram.
“Being the captain of the Portugal team is one of the greatest pride and privilege of my life,” wrote Ronaldo.
“I always give and I will give everything for my country, this will never change.
“But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel like an entire nation is affected.
“Raise your head and face the next challenge now!” Force, Portugal. “
Despite the controversy in the final moments of the game, Jota certainly caught the attention of Liverpool fans, who took to social media to praise the striker.
