African Cup of Nations qualifiers: what are the stakes?

Despite beating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in November 2019, Ethiopia’s loss to Niger in Niamey means they are still not guaranteed to qualify as they seek to return to Afcon only for the second time since 1982.

Likewise, Madagascar, despite some encouraging results in qualifying, has yet to prove that it can build on its first appearance at Afcon in 2019 and join the tournament again.

The islanders must beat Niger at home to give themselves a chance to progress; even if they do, Ethiopia is still moving forward with more than a defeat against the elephants in Abidjan.

If Ethiopia loses against the Ivorians, and Madagascar beats Niger, the Barea place the Walias in Cameroon.
