Another US international is heading to Major League Soccer.
According to a report by picture, Alfredo Morales is expected to join New York City FC “in a few days” for a “small fee”. Fortuna Dusseldorf revealed on the club’s official Twitter account that there are “promising negotiations” and that the 30-year-old midfielder “has not participated in the team’s training”. His current contract expires at the end of this season.
After suffering an ankle injury at the start of the season, Morales has made a total of 17 appearances for Düsseldorf. He previously played with Hertha BSC and FC Ingolstadt. After relegation from the Bundesliga, the club are in sixth place in the second division and decidedly outside the promotion photo.
Switching to MLS is a smart move for a player in their 30s looking for some security. There will be fierce competition for playing time at center midfield, with New York City FC featuring a mix of seasoned veterans and young prospects on the depth map. If he manages to establish himself as a starter and make an impact, perhaps his international career will see a revival.
Eligible to represent Germany and Peru, Morales has won 16 caps for the US Men’s National Team since his debut in 2013. He was a member of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad. His most recent appearance was held in November 2019, against Canada and Cuba in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Although Morales hasn’t played for the United States in over a year, there’s still a chance the veteran midfielder will have a role in World Cup qualifying. Experience can be an asset in meaningful games, especially for a team defined by their youth. “I love his range and the physicality he brings to the squad,” manager Gregg Berhalter said in 2019, describing two qualities that would benefit the national team. The coming summer includes two competitions, the Nations League and the Gold Cup, both presenting the opportunity for his return.
