Stakeholders at a forum in Bolgatanga in the Haut-Est region called on the government to provide resources to the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to promote accelerated national development.
They said the role of the Commission in ensuring peaceful coexistence among Ghanaians and galvanizing support for the implementation of national policies and programs was essential as the country could not afford to ignore it.
Stakeholders made the call during a review meeting of the Bolgatanga Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) organized by the NCCE.
The meeting was to review the work of IPDC regarding the 2020 elections and the election petition to the Supreme Court and other matters.
Stakeholders explained that the general peace and harmony the country currently enjoys can be largely attributed to the role played by the NCCE in educating Ghanaians about their basic rights and responsibilities and the need to maintain peace in the country. the country for national development.
Ms Victoria Adimazoya, retired educator and IPDC member, said that as the 2020 elections approach, the Commission has engaged various stakeholders including; youth groups and who contributed to the peaceful elections in the country.
She noted that the NCCE had made Ghanaians understand that sustainable development could only take place when there was peace and respect for the rule of law and noted that lack of resources sometimes hampered their ability to deliver. of their mandate.
The retired educator said the government should view the Commission as a catalyst for development that could rally all Ghanaians for development and provide it with adequate resources to undertake its civic education mandated in all neighborhoods across the country. Alhaji Abu Fuseini, the coordinator of the Bolgatanga Nasaara central constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) said the work of the NCCE was huge, but had been neglected for a long time.
He therefore called on the government to urgently provide resources to the institution to work effectively for national unity and development.
Mr. Yussif Kadir, member of the regional communication team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), said that the NCCE had contributed enormously to deepening the democratic credentials of the country and that it was necessary to deploy a collective effort to rejuvenate it. .
He said the lack of logistics, such as vehicles, has made it difficult for Commission staff to deliver adequately to Ghanaians.
Mr. Jafaru Omar, City Manager of NCCE noted that the review meeting should uncover stakeholders, experiences and lessons learned from the elections and petition to improve them in the future.
He said there was relative peace in the region before, during and after the elections and that all political parties agreed to delay the elections and work for the development of the region.
