The daughter of former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo has recognized Ghana as her second home after Côte d’Ivoire.

In an interview on Awesome Morning Show from JoyNews On Friday, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo revealed that she and some members of her family are seeking refuge in Ghana and have been living here since April 2011.

“Basically that’s what we chose to do. We have informed the Ghanaian government of our presence. But we decided it was best to keep it quiet.

She told host Benjamin Akakpo that the family decided to opt for a quiet life instead of being exposed to controversies that might have arisen from sharing their whereabouts.

“We worked here, took the kids to school, come back, go to church. Just do our own thing.

Former President Laurent Gbagbo was President of Côte d’Ivoire from 2000 until his arrest in April 2011. His arrest came four months after refusing to resign from office after losing the 2010 general elections.

Recounting the experience, her daughter said: “It is worth remembering. Something worth learning ”.

She said that as a faithful Christian family, they believe that “in everything that happens to you there is a reason behind, there is a wisdom behind”.

Opening on the experience the family witnessed during the arrest and exile of the former Ivorian president, Marie-Patrice said she was traumatized and that the family must remain true to their faith in the family building.

“Like I said, draw lessons. Lots of lessons. It was difficult. But we survived. We survived it. We have become stronger. We are happy. It couldn’t break us.

Recounting memories of Côte d’Ivoire, Marie-Patrice Gbagbo said the family had lost nothing by leaving the country regarding character.

Responding to whether the family will return to their home country, she said Côte d’Ivoire will always be their home.

“We don’t know when we’ll go back, but by the grace of God, we’ll go and rebuild when we get there,” she said.
