More than 60 dolphins and a large number of different fish species stranded along the coasts of Axim-Bewire in the municipality of Nzema East in the Western region and Osu in the Greater Accra region during the two last days.

In Axim-Bewire alone, more than 60 stranded dolphins were counted on Sunday April 4, 2021, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Some of the large fish species spotted at Osu in Accra were stranded on Friday, Graphic Online’s Dotsey Kobla Aklorbortu reports.

Environmental officers in these areas have a hectic time to prevent members of the public from consuming the fish or have close contact with them, as it is still unclear what causes them to wash ashore.

Environmental officials fear that many of these species of fish and marine mammals have not washed the shore alive but are dead and samples must be taken for laboratory analysis.

In Axim-Bewire, in the Western Region, all 60 dolphins have disappeared from the shore, as the transformed dolphin is known to attract very high prices in the market.

Currently, the Ghana Police Service Marine Police Unit and the Fisheries Commission are visiting the scene to help contain the situation and if possible recover it from those dealing with it.
