The Portuguese says he won’t forget the high-flying crown until it is mathematically impossible for the Red Devils to catch Manchester City
Bruno Fernandes has insisted he has yet to give up the Premier League title as Manchester United strive to ‘win it all’.
United sit second in the top flight with eight games to go, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on track to deliver the club’s best result in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
The general consensus among fans and pundits is that the Red Devils will miss the title as Manchester City only need 11 more points to lift the trophy, but Fernandes still refuses to concede defeat to their main rivals.
What was said?
“For us it’s about improving as a team,” said the Portuguese midfielder. talkSPORT.
“Of course we want to win trophies, we want to win whatever we’re included in. At the moment, we are not at that level this season.
“We lost a lot of games. We’ve lost games that we don’t expect to lose and lost a lot of points at home and away, our form is really, really different. I don’t remember if we lost an away game in the league.
“We are improving and this season is not over. Until it’s not mathematically possible, you have to believe. So when I see that it is not possible to catch City, I will forget about the league. “
Can United catch City?
Solskjaer’s side came within 14 points of first-place City, beating Brighton 2-1 in their opener after the international break last weekend.
United can narrow the gap to 11 if they win their game in hand, but would likely have to win all remaining games to have any hope of overtaking City – who also boast of a higher goal difference.
What else can the Red Devils accomplish in 2020-21?
United left the Carabao Cup in the semi-final at the hands of City before losing to Leicester City in the FA Cup quarter-final, but can still clinch a trophy in continental competition.
The Manchester team are currently preparing for a quarter-final of the Europa League with Granada, with the first leg of the meeting set to take place in Spain on Thursday.
Fernandes would not settle for a trophy and a second place in the Premier League, however, as he added: “It is never a success when you win just one trophy at this club. In the past they have won lots of trophies.
“If this season we only win the Europa League, we still have to improve.”
