Formalin, he noted, is also used as a preservative in products such as antiseptics, medicines, cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, lotions and sunscreens, and cleaning products.

Dr Fameye gave the warning in an interview with the Ghana News Agency as part of the Testicular Cancer Awareness Month awareness campaign.

He said testicular cancer was cancers that started in the testes of the male reproductive glands. It usually affects young men between the ages of 15 and 35.

Formaldehyde, a derivative of formaldehyde (CH2O), is typically used to preserve bodies in mortuaries.

Dr Famiye said the chemical is a carcinogen in humans, particularly testicular cancer.

The public, he noted, should avoid buying meat or fish without flies around them, especially when it has not been properly covered.

He explained that when formalin was present in the air at levels above 0.1, it could cause wheezing, nausea, watery eyes, coughing, and a burning sensation in the eyes, nose and eyes. short-term throat and skin irritation, as well as cancer. a long period of time.

He said that although fish sellers continue to deny the use of formalin in fish processing, the public should be vigilant and careful when purchasing and advised traders to abandon the practice.
