Four people suspected of being involved in the murder of the late Mfantseman MP Ekow Quansah Hayford were sentenced to 20 years in prison each specifically for theft.
The four were jailed for another robbery in which they were involved weeks after the murder of the former lawmaker.
Police say those convicted will have to appear in court again on the murder charge.
The Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, COP Ken Yeboah, said that while police were investigating the murder of the former MP in October 2020, they received information about a flight on the Jakobo-Obuasi highway on May 11, 2021.
Four of the thieves were arrested by a patrol team, while another was shot dead.
Police said during questioning that the suspects confessed to being involved in the murder of the then lawmaker.
“They were charged with theft on the basis of the incident of May 11, 2021, ie the theft on the Jakobo-Obuasi road. On June 18, 2021, after the trial, they were found guilty and sentenced to 20 years in prison each, ”he said.
“All those convicted should be brought to justice for the theft and murder of the late Ekow Quansah Hayford. This means that we will now indict them and try them for the murder of the deputy, ”said the head of the CID.
Mr Hayford, 50, was shot dead by gunmen who stopped his vehicle on the Abeadze-Dominase-Abeadze-Duadzi-Mankessim road while returning from a campaign trip on Thursday, October 8, 2020.
His driver remained injured.
Mr Hayford is said to have answered questions from the attackers, who wanted to know if he was indeed the Member of Parliament for the constituency.
