The Federal Government of Nigeria has been advised to be careful and reasonable in handling the treason case brought against the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Emeka Kalu, a former candidate for governor of Abia state, gave the advice in a statement made available to reporters in Umuahia on Thursday evening.
He said Kanu deserves a fair hearing, fair treatment, insisting that all professional precautions must be taken to ensure that he does not die in custody.
He further insisted that the provisions of international law on conflict resolution, the United Nations charters on fundamental human rights and self-determination must be properly followed in dealing with a high profile case of this nature in order to avoid regrettable mistakes.
Kalu cautioned the government against handling the case with aggressive or brutal show of force in the face of the current volatile and fragile conditions in the Nigerian state.
His words, “The jubilation going across the breadth and length of this country over the arrest of the leader of the IPOB should not be seen as a celebration of the success of having finally apprehended” with the hoof in the wheel. of Nigeria ”but should be seen as a mark of the government’s commitment to entrench peace and tranquility in the country.
“This is a democratic dispensation where the rule of law prevails and reigns supreme. The provisions of international law on conflict resolution, the UN charters on the protection of basic human rights and self-determination must be properly followed when dealing with a high profile case of this nature in order to ‘avoid regrettable mistakes. The Nigeria we see today belongs to all of us and no one or ethnic group has a monopoly on the ownership of our dear country Nigeria.
“This is a sensitive issue that requires appropriate administrative professionalism and the federal government under the leadership of President Buhari is urged to be judicious in handling the matter because of its sensitivity.
“Terrorism is a condemnable act in the hearts of any right-thinking man, so the government is encouraged to fight and prevent it at all costs. The government must do everything in its power to ensure that carrot hands are not given to others while another person is treated brutally.
“Dialogue is important in this context because the government is opening a door for it. The federal government should strive to create a fertile ground for peaceful dialogue not only with IPOB, but with other ethnic nationalities struggling for autonomy and the restructuring of our national fiscal federalism.
“This window for peace does not mean the weakness of the government, but it is one of the bureaucratic keys through which the door to justice and equity opens in a democratic and justice-oriented government.”

Federation Attorney General and Justice Minister Abubakar Malami, SAN who confirmed the development, said he was arrested by a combined team of Nigerian and foreign security officers during a coordinated interception.
In this context, he was brought before Judge Binta Nyako of a Federal High Court in Abuja for the continuation of his trial. Judge Nyako, after listening to Kanu and the government, remanded him to the Department of State Services, DSS. A few years ago, Kanu skipped the bail and escaped court.
