Upper West Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) Public Relations Officer (PRO) Cletus Awuni recounted how he was assaulted by soldiers in Wa.
Telling his ordeal on the Great morning show, Mr Awuni said on Friday that he was repeatedly hit on the head with an object, leaving bruises on his scalp.
He also revealed that the soldiers tortured him with a taser, shocking him momentarily, as he refused to hand his phone over to them. He said he refused to hand over the phone because it contained footage of soldiers brutalizing their victims, which he intended to use as evidence.
The military stormed Wa County in search of a commercial tricycle operator who allegedly sped off with a cell phone belonging to one of the soldiers.
Mr Awuni explained that he learned of the incident and decided to check things out for himself.
“I was on the phone with the police commander, trying to find out why the soldiers were on the streets beating people when I saw the soldiers seriously beating someone. So I had to end the call and film what was happening for evidentiary reasons.
“When I started filming, they pounced on me and started beating me mercilessly, demanding that I remove the video but I refused. Then they used the Tasers on me to get me to delete the video, but I refused, ”he said.
He noted that it took the intervention of the MTTD commander in Wa to prevent them from lynching him.
Mr. Awuni condemned the actions of the military, calling them appalling.
He said that “this is something that must end. We are not in the animal kingdom where some of these incidents are expected to occur. “
“I am very sad that as a country we have to find ourselves in such a situation as if we were in the military age. At least it’s a democratic state and we shouldn’t be seeing some of these things happening. “
Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) said internal disciplinary measures have been instituted to deal with anyone found guilty of such unprofessional conduct by Wa soldiers.
