Some 22 CSOs gathered in the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working to promote good governance, human rights and public accountability, calling on the Commission on Human Rights and administrative justice (CHRAJ) to take charge of the investigation into the recent disturbances in Ejura-Sekyedumase while they accuse the Ministry of the Interior of being complicit in the violence.
Following the disturbances in Ejura, the Interior Ministry under the orders of President Akufo-Addo set up a three-member commission of inquiry to investigate and make conclusions on the deaths of three people and the wounded.
Although CSOs totaling 22 different organizations say they congratulate the president, they have, through a joint press release, expressed their concerns about the involvement of the Home Office in the investigation.
“While we commend the President for conducting swift investigations into this matter, we are concerned that the use of the Home Office to investigate matters involving agencies acting under the authority of the ministry will jeopardize the fairness and integrity of its findings.
“The Ministry of the Interior, which may have been complicit in the management of this unfortunate incident at Ejura Sekyedumase, cannot be a judge for its own cause,” reads a statement from the CSOs.
According to them, the CHRAJ should be the appropriate body to conduct the investigation as it deals with the violation of human rights, which civilians refused in the case of the Ejura-Sekyedumase chaos.
“It is quite normal for an independent body to investigate this matter. In this regard, we call on the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) under whose mandate this case, which involves excessive violations of human rights, falls squarely, to thoroughly investigate this matter. incident and to bring criminal proceedings against all those found guilty, ”adds the joint press release of the CSOs.
Meanwhile, CSOs call on the youth of Ejura Sekyedumase and indeed all Ghanaians to remain calm and exercise restraint as the investigation into this matter continues.
