Former French Prime Minister in disgrace and defeated presidential candidate, François Fillon has been appointed to the board of directors of the Russian state oil company Zarubezhneft, according to a list published by a site specializing in economic information.
Zarubezhneft did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the list posted by the e-disclosure.ru website operated by the Interfax news agency, which said Fillon had been a member of the board since June 28. .
Fillon, who led the French government under President Nicolas Sarkozy between 2007 and 2012, heads Apteras, a consulting firm he created after an ignominious 2017 presidential bid.
His campaign was capsized by a bogus jobs scandal, for which a court sentenced him in June 2020 to five years in prison, three of which were suspended.
He has previously worked with Russian companies through Apteras and was appointed for his role on the Zarubezhneft board by the Moscow government in June.
Fillon, 67, is just the latest in a series of former top European politicians to join Russian energy companies.
Former Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl, who notoriously danced with President Vladimir Putin at his wedding in 2018, was appointed in June to the board of directors of Rosneft, Russia’s largest oil producer.
Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has been chairman of the board of Rosneft since 2017, earning almost half a million euros per year.
