South African group, Silence SA are the 2021 recipients of the Old Mutual Amazing Voices Pan-African Crown and will walk away with a whopping $ 100,000.
After winning 5 Golden Voices for Best Performance of the Season, Africa chose Hush SA as the winner of the Sensational Pan-African Singing Competition in a spectacular final on Sunday evening (July 4).
The final was broadcast simultaneously on Mzansi Magic, Mzansi Wethu (South Africa), Africa Magic (Nigeria), Maisha Magic (Kenya), Zambezi Magic (Zimbabwe) and Akwaaba (Ghana)
The group took their first steps towards realizing their dreams and doing great things, not only at home but beyond to become global musical sensations.
An all-male gospel group of six members, formed as a brotherhood of childhood friends spanning a period of ten years. Tsholofelo Ntuli, Phumlani Tshabalala, Sinethemba Magubane, Zamokuhle Nkosi, Thamsanqa Mthabela, Nicholas Malimba also known as Hush SA to their new fans who followed their progress through the DStv Amazing Voices competition, all from Johannesburg, South Africa.
The group entered the second season of the Old Mutual Amazing Voices competition which drew 546 initial online videos from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa and rose to stardom.
Little did they know that their initial registration would see them begin a long and rewarding process that would end in Johannesburg in June of this year with a final victory in Africa’s first acapella event. At the same time, they were rewarded with the benefits of learning the skills and gaining the important knowledge needed for groups to succeed in the difficult world of music.
Old Mutual Brand Manager Thobile Tshabalala says, “Our goal at Old Mutual is to defend mutually positive futures in all African markets in which we operate. This competition allows us to connect with Africans through the universal language of music and demonstrate that anyone can do great things with the right financial partner and become their best. We saw exactly that with the Amazing Voices Season 2 winners and congratulate Hush SA on their well-deserved success. “
It all started in October 2020, when, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, participants were encouraged to submit online performance videos to Old Mutual and DStv for review and selection.
The winner’s opposition, from the five countries included in the competition, was like them, all unsigned groups looking to take their careers to a new level.
After an initial screening process, Hush SA moved on to the grueling second step; attend closed-door hearings in their own country before famous judges (where two groups from each country were selected).
The band then managed to be voted into the Top 10 for Amazing Voices Season 2 and were able to attend an intensive music bootcamp in Sun City, about an hour outside of Johannesburg.
The production of the Covid bubble and the music bootcamp in Sun City kicked off with the Top 10 unsigned bands, involving a total of 65 participants.
The production required the employment of 187 people to make the magic happen, a clear demonstration of DStv and Brightfire TV’s passion for empowering creatives in the film and television industry.
Approximately 84 rooms were taken care of during the 30 days of production, and 315 Covid-19 antigen tests and 116 PCR tests were performed regularly with the crew and competitors, with no positive cases reported.
During the bootcamp in Sun City, the surviving groups, comprising between four and eight members, were subjected to vocal training as well as stage presence. They were supervised by Khaya Mthethwa to refine their musicality. During these extreme three weeks, the finalists prepared for the final blackmail phase by having their vocal and performance skills honed by the team at Amazing Voices.
The drama, build-up and tensions of Africa’s premier music event have been eagerly watched by a Pan-African television audience since the launch of the second season of Amazing Voices in April. For many competitors, not only Hush SA, it was their first exhibition to the sparkling world yet demanding world-class television productions.
What happened next may now be history, but has left South Africa with a distinction of national singing sensations whose voices could be the ticket to international stardom and an additional ambassador for the country and its people.
“DStv believes that music is an international language that crosses borders and brings together people of different nationalities. As a broadcaster with an African footprint, we believe that bringing African talent to the fore and developing budding careers is part of our raison d’être.
“We are proud of our heritage and our unique ability to use our resources to strengthen recognition of talented Africans,” said Alex Okyere, Managing Director of MultiChoice Ghana.
