Set up a nursery in schools to serve young breastfeeding mothers – GNAT reminds government

The Ghana National of Teachers (GNAT) reminds the government to create nurseries in schools to serve young breastfeeding mothers.

Former Deputy Secretary-General for Education and Professional Development Gifty Apambil said the move would allow mothers to concentrate fully during school hours.

Speaking at a workshop in Abankro in Kwabre East district of Ashanti region, she said such a nursery could serve other busy people in the community.

“They should make this a reality as part of the condition of service which states that in each group of schools there should be a crèche established to serve young female teachers who are breastfeeding, so that they can have enough time to take care of the classes.

“It will also serve the young mothers in our communities who are thirsty to participate in the economic activities of our country.

“It’s part of our collective agreement. It was signed. They just have to put it into practice, ”she stressed.

GNAT works with the Canadian Teachers’ Federation (CTF / CTF) to organize workshops for teachers and principals nationwide.

It aims to train newly recruited teachers in literacy, numeracy and mentoring. Young teachers will also be empowered in new teaching methods.

The GNAT village of Abankro served as a meeting place for participants from the Volta region.

One hundred and fifty-four newly recruited teachers and school directors from the Volta region participated in the program.

Ms Apambil called on teachers to create an enabling environment for students.

“Every child in this country is a potential resource for this nation and we should not lose any.

“We need to make our school environment attractive to both girls and boys.

“How do we welcome the different categories of children who are called upon to teach? Every child is a unique person and we will need a variety of teaching skills in our teaching so that we can inspire them to sit down and learn, ”she urged.

GNAT Resource Center Director Ernest Asamoah urged teachers to serve as good mentors for their students.

“When we show a good character, obviously they’ll take it from there. Let’s go out there and show that the teaching profession is good, ”he said.
