Abia State Police Command revealed on Monday that some individuals or groups of people are currently planning to hold protests in the state.
DAILY POST reports that there have been indications that some supporters of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, have pledged to organize protests in parts of the south-eastern region, in particularly in the state of Abia.
Kanu, from Abia, was recently re-arrested in an unknown country to return to Nigeria to continue his trial.
The fugitive, who has dual British and Nigerian citizenship, is currently being held by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Reacting to the planned demonstration, the police command, in a statement released by its spokesperson, SP Geoffrey Igbonna urged protesters to back down due to the current level of insecurity in the state.
The statement reads: “Information available to the Abia State Police Command indicates that individuals or groups of people are planning to conduct protests of any kind in the state.
“In view of the security situation in the country, especially in the geopolitical area of the south-east, the police commissioner of the Abia State Command wishes to advise potential protesters to give up or postpone this exercise immediately.
“This has become necessary because thugs or disbelievers can hijack the process to wreak havoc on the lives and property of innocent citizens.
“State security agents have been placed on red alert because the command will not tolerate any act that could truncate peace in the state.”
