The Ghana National Teachers Association (GNAT) is calling on the government to disburse the capitation grant to basic schools across the country to enable them to operate effectively.
According to GNAT, elementary school principals have had to resort to other means to make schools work because they cannot talk about their predicament.
At the central regional conference to elect regional GNAT leaders, the association’s central regional president, Reverend Isaac Owusu, pleaded with the government to take responsibility for schools to make the lives of teachers and children comfortable .
Mr. Owusu, who retained his post after the conference, instructed the government to pay the backlog of capitation grants to basic schools to make schools run efficiently.
He warned some teachers and part of the public who still taint the welfare issues of teachers and political children to refrain from such acts.
“Directors of basic schools, we have reopened the school and to this day, there is not a single poll tax in the schools. So if you have a lot of problems and we go to our employer about it, where is the policy in that, ”he asked.
Senior Lecturer at the School of Economics at the University of Cape Coast, Dr Mark Armah pleaded with the GNAT leadership to show leadership in protecting the ethics of the teaching profession.
In addition, GNAT National President Philippa Larsen implored teachers to plan for their future so that they do not retire as poor people.
She emphasized, “You need to save for your retirement; it is important that this guides you throughout your journey in the profession. We need to work together to make sure that each of us owns our homes before we retire. Better late than never.”
