Ningo Prampram MP Sam Nartey George questioned the presence of military personnel at the main opposition Democratic National Congress “march for justice” on Tuesday (July 6th).
Mr George told reporters at the march that the military had “never been a tool of crowd control” and therefore wondered why it was present at the march.
“Military officers are not trained to control crowds, so what is their business on the road,” he asked.
“As the organizers, we have no consultation with the military, we have had consultations with the police even to agree on which side of the roads to walk, where to make the turns and all, so why do appeal to the military, he told reporters.
The party marches to demand justice for the lynched social media activist Ibrahim Kaaka Mohammed and the subsequent murder of two protesters who marched for justice for Kaaka killed.
They were shot dead by soldiers who were helping the police to drive out the demonstrators.
He said “army excesses” were part of the reason for the march and wondered why the army would want to “provoke” the people.
The lawmaker also alleged that there had been a meeting the day before to thwart the march.
“To those who attended the meeting last night and decided they were going to send the military to meet us halfway, we saw your decision,” he said.
“Did the IGP say they were unable to handle the situation?” he asks himself.
“Since when have the military been responsible for security during a demonstration? The army is always a safeguard when the police themselves make the request for the army, ”he noted.
