JoyNews’ political bureau chief Evans Mensah joined the committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing of protesters by security officers in Ejura on Tuesday, June 29.
President Akufo-Addo gave the Minister of the Interior 10 days to provide a detailed report of the investigation which also led to the injuries of four other residents.
The deceased met their untimely death as they protested against the murder of their colleague, Ibrahim Mohammed, also known as Kaaka, which took place days before the unrest.
Committee members include George Kingsley Koomson, judge of the Court of Appeal as president, security expert, Dr Vladimir Antwi Danso, Juliet Amoah, executive director of Penplusbyte, and a civil society organization
The three-member committee at Tuesday’s meeting invited a few people of interest including JoyNews‘Erastus Asare Donkor.
The Multimedia journalist was on the ground during the debacle between the youth of Ejura Sekyedumase and the joint team which had been deployed to thwart and possible excesses.
He recounted events that unfolded while demonstrating some of the maneuvers adopted by the security team during the chaos, as captured by himself and the camera technician.
One of the deceased protesters volunteered to lead the JoyNews team through the volatile crowd minutes before his assassination.
“When we arrived at the scene, the young people were angry, so they told us not to film what was happening, but one of the protesters, now deceased, Nasiru Yussif, spoke to them in Hausa. , and they calmed down. So he and another guy formed a circle around us, so that we could complete our tasks. He was very active, following us wherever we went, ”Erastus told the committee on Tuesday.
However, questions raised by the panel over Kaaka’s affiliation with social activism group #FixTheCountry as they probed the ethical basis on which Erastus’ reporting did not suit Evans Mensah.
During an editorial on PM Express Tuesday night, Evans was unable to understand how the activist’s state of affinity with the said movement resulted in the duo’s murder as seen that day.
He believes that the apparent emphasis on the ethical nature of the journalist’s reporting – which only resulted in a set of widely broadcast footage – falls outside the mandate of the committee’s work.
According to him, the mandate of the committee was cut off – to establish the events of the day according to the directives of President Akufo-Addo.
For this reason, the reflection on Kaaka’s death that ensued days before the unrest could not have a direct impact on the extent of the chaos that was covered live by Erastus and the JoyNews crew.
His point was corroborated by a security analyst who expressed concern about the committee’s line of questions on the day the committee opened.
Mr. Bonaa believes that the energy could have been devoted to probing the clear admission of the regional minister of Ashanti, Simon Osei-Mensah, to have sanctioned the military deployment on what he believes to be an obligation of the police service from Ghana.
He was also disgusted by the apparent contempt for the security chain of command, which he said could have saved the two deceased if he was followed by the latter.
