Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated in his country, according to the country’s acting Prime Minister.

A group of unidentified individuals attacked Mr. Moise’s private residence overnight and shot him dead, Claude Joseph said in a statement.

First Lady Martine Moïse is hospitalized following Tuesday evening’s attack, Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph said.

Joseph called the murder a “heinous, inhuman and barbaric act,” adding that the Haitian National Police and other authorities were monitoring the situation in Haiti.

The impoverished Caribbean country has faced political instability in recent months, which has sparked an outbreak of violent protests, kidnappings and organized crime.

The country’s main opposition parties, the judiciary and activist groups said Moise’s five-year term as president ended in February.

But the president said he had a year left in power since an interim government ruled the country for a year after he was elected.
