The Tunisian Ministry of Health said the Covid-19 situation in the country was catastrophic, explaining that the health system had collapsed.
The country has recorded a high number of infections, with 9,823 cases and 134 deaths on Tuesday being the highest since the start of the pandemic.
Field hospitals have been established across the country, and the ministry says they are not enough.
The country’s health workers are tired. The bodies of virus victims are left in beds due to the lack of staff to move them.
“We are struggling to provide oxygen,” ministry spokesman Nisaf Ben Alaya said.
Six regions of the country are under total lockdown.
Cases of the virus in various African countries are on the rise and the World Health Organization (WHO) says “the worst is yet to come”.
Vaccination remains low on the continent, but the WHO is optimistic that donations from the United States and other countries through the Covax initiative will help countries scale up vaccination campaigns.
