Tarkwa-Nsuaem MP George Mireku Duker struggled in the face of opposition against parliamentary approval of the payment of salaries to the First and Second Ladies of the Republic.
Parliament has officially approved that the wives of the president and vice-president will now receive salaries.
This was confirmed by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.
“The truth is that all surviving spouses of current and former heads of state have always received salaries. Lordina Mahama, Naadu Mills, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Faustina Acheampong, Fulera Liman, etc.
“What has happened now is that the arrangement has been formalized, but it has been done legally based on the recommendation of the Emoluments Committee,” the minister said.

But Ningo Prampram’s NDC MP Sam George threatened to sue the approval.
“I am an MP, I personally do not subscribe to this, whether it is a chairman of the NDC or a chairman of the NPP, your wife is not a public officer, your wife is your wife. Are we also going to say that the spouse of the chief justice, the spouse of the president must also be paid? Where do we draw the line? Already they are getting benefits, they are getting state protection at the expense of the taxpayer and I have no problem with that, “he said in an interview on Neat FM.
NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC also sued the Attorney General asking the Supreme Court to declare that “approval by Parliament to pay first and second ladies’ wages is inconsistent with Clauses 1 and 2 of Article 71 of the Law of 1992. Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and therefore be declared null, void and inapplicable ”.
In a brief overview by Peacefmonline.com, Abronye DC also asked the court to order that, “in accordance with Articles 108 and 178 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana; parliament cannot, on its own initiative, initiate or approve the payment of such fees; which would necessarily be paid out of public funds; without a draft law to that effect emanating from and presented by the government and duly adopted as law ”.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo”, Mireku Duker wondered why people would go against official approval for first and second ladies to receive salaries.
According to him, the action of Parliament is justifiable with regard to the services that the spouses of the President and the Vice-President render to the nation.
With particular reference to certain contributions by Rebecca Akufo-Addo, wife of Her Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to the well-being of humanity, especially women and children, Mireku Duker called on the nation to pamper the first and second ladies instead of opposing their wages.
“Go everywhere, they pamper the First Ladies,” he said.
He also pointed out; “Ms. Akufo-Addo’s contribution to this nation is 200 times more than what we perceive as an allowance for her … Let them calculate her contributions, just her hospital project alone – ‘baby-to- project mother “. They should take it and calculate the cost. It is more [more]… The difference is big. ”
For him, the opponents must “bow their heads in shame”.
