Visitors will be able to wander the gardens of Queen Elizabeth’s London home on their own for the first time from Friday – and enjoy a picnic while they’re there.
There have once been guided tours of the 39-acre grounds of Buckingham Palace, the current landscape of which dates back to 1820.
But this year, a 16.50 pound ($ 22.70) ticket, available until September, will allow tourists to explore the gardens on their own.
“We unfortunately were not able to open the cabins this year due to the current situation (coronavirus) as we normally could and so it is wonderful to be able to open the garden instead”, Sally Goodsir, of the Royal Collection Trust which manages the royal palaces, told media.
Visitors will be able to see the 156-meter herbaceous border of the gardens, its beehives and plane trees planted by and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and picnic on its manicured lawns while indulging in garden accessories. royal themed picnic such as cotton blanket and towels.
Traditionally, the Queen has three annual garden parties at the palace, but these have had to be canceled in the past two years due to the pandemic. Likewise, the opening of the cabins to the public during the summer months, which has taken place since 1993, has also not been able to continue.

The palace is halfway through a 10-year £ 369million redevelopment to replace electrical wiring, boilers and renovate other aging infrastructure.
Work was sped up during the pandemic as the Queen spent most of her time in her Windsor Castle home outside London.
