Former South African President Jacob Zuma has lost his latest attempt to block his arrest, which means he will remain in jail.
Zuma’s legal team hope to overturn his 15-month sentence for contempt of court, which he began serving this week after surrendering to police on Wednesday night.
But speaking on Friday, the High Court judge presiding over the attempt to stay his arrest said the request had been “dismissed with costs”.
However, this is not Zuma’s only attempt to overturn his conviction, which was returned to him by the South African Constitutional Court after he failed to attend a corruption probe during his presidency. He denies any corruption and did not cooperate in the legal process.
According to the BBC’s Namesa Maseko, the case is expected to return to the Constitutional Court on Monday, when judges will consider whether to overturn or reduce the sentence.
Currently, Zuma, who still enjoys a large base of support in South Africa, will be eligible for parole in just under four months, officials said.
