• Citizens asked the state to reconsider their decision
• They also called for the money to be channeled towards job creation and infrastructure creation.
The decision to pay salaries to the first and second ladies, Ms. Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Ms. Samira Bawumia respectively, has sparked some controversy among Ghanaians who believe this decision is totally unnecessary.
By this, they mean that such an initiative is not necessary, especially now that the citizens demand that the country be repaired.
The wives of the president and his deputy will receive salaries after parliament approves the recommendations of an emoluments committee.
Once approved, they must be paid over GH ¢ 30,000 per month in 2021.
But speaking exclusively to GhanaWeb, some Ghanaians lamented such an initiative adding that there are more pressing needs in the country than the payment of salaries to the presidents’ wives.
” Times are hard. I don’t think the time is right for this. Are they more important than us? Students study under trees in disadvantaged communities. Some of them have been crammed into the classrooms and that’s not fair. These are fairly urgent needs that must be addressed urgently. You should have informed us of this decision before challenging the power. We will not accept this, ”said one individual.
“If that’s what they decided to do, then they have to pay salaries to the wives of every government employee. We are really suffering in this country, so this decision should not be encouraged at all. Rather, these sums should be used to create jobs for young people. I have never seen or heard that the president’s wives are entitled to wages, ”said another.
