The 2021 population and housing census exercise ends today

The 2021 population and housing census exercise led by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) ends today, Sunday, July 11.

The nationwide 15-day exercise began on Sunday, June 27 after its launch at Kwame Nkrumah Circle.

Government statistician Professor Samuel Kobina Annim at the launch said the population census is necessary to help recovery and development of the economy and future planning.

To this end, a number of enumerators have been deployed across the country. Approximately 5,392 enumerators have been deployed to the North region.

President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Former President John Dramani Mahama, President Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu are among those who have been counted.

The president and other government officials have since encouraged members of the general public to avail themselves and participate in the exercise.

According to former President Mahama, participation in the exercise is imperative “because it is necessary to know how many people live in your country in order to be able to better plan in terms of social facilities and management of the economy, and also spreading development so that everyone receives a fair share of the national pie.

Unfortunately, one of the enumerators participating in the 2021 population and housing census exercise, Faisal Issah, died prematurely in Saaka, in the Haut-Est region. His colleague, Gifty Abane, however suffered some injuries.

Recently, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) lamented the low turnout and minimal attention given to the nationwide population and housing census exercise.

Party Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketia said in a press release that since the start of the fiscal year there has been little publicity while enumerators have also not been seen in parts of the country. .

Information from the Ghana Statistical Service revealed that about 56.6 percent of affected households were counted nationwide. The completion rate varies between 38.9% for the Greater Accra region and 80% in the Northeast region.

The Service therefore asked those not yet counted to call the service and ask for the number of the agent assigned to their sector.

Ghana Statistical Service Head of Advertising, Education and Advocacy Mr. Nyarkoh-Larbi said these people can call the Ghana Statistical Service hotline, which is 0800 426 426, and ask for contact details (callback card ) the supervisor or investigator assigned to their region.

Referring to the probability of an extension in order to enumerate the entire Ghanaian population on the back of the massive land still to be covered by the end of July 11, Mr. Francis Nyarkoh-Larbi, indicated that “a census does not have strict guidelines ”, and that over time the data will be collected to achieve the required objective.

On the other hand, the statistical service of Ghana will hold a press briefing today at 3 p.m. on the forecourt of its headquarters to inform the nation about the exercise.
