Charles Owusu, former head of the monitoring unit of the Forestry Commission
Former Forestry Commission monitoring unit chief Charles Owusu hit hard on NPP regional chairman Bono, Kwame Baffoe, and NDC MP for Ningo Prampram, Sam George, for their threats to prosecute the government regarding the official decision to pay the first and second Ladies’ wages.
Parliament approved the wives of the president and vice president to be paid salaries, but this was vehemently condemned by both politicians and part of the general public.
Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, took the Attorney General to the Supreme Court asking the court for a “statement that approval by Parliament to pay first and second ladies’ wages is inconsistent with ARTICLE 71,” CLAUSES 1 AND 2 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana and therefore be declared null, void and unenforceable “and an ordinance which” in accordance with Articles 108 and 178 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana; parliament cannot, on its own initiative, initiate or approve the payment of such fees; which would necessarily be paid out of public funds; without a draft law to that effect emanating from and introduced by the government and duly adopted as law ”.
Sam George, also threatening to take legal action, argues that the First and Second Ladies are not public officials, therefore parliamentary approval is in violation of Article 71 of the constitution.
“As far as I know, there was no arrangement for this, the president’s wife and the vice-president’s wife are not Section 71 holders.”
“I am an MP, I personally do not subscribe to this, whether it is a chairman of the NDC or a chairman of the NPP, your wife is not a public officer, your wife is your wife. Are we also going to say that the spouse of the chief justice, the spouse of the president must also be paid? Where to draw the line? Already they are receiving allowances, they are getting state protection at the expense of the taxpayer and I have no problem with that, ” he said in an interview on Neat FM.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’, Charles Owusu dismissed the lawsuits by asking ” if we cancel the payment to First Ladies, what will happen in this country? Will it kill or live? ”
” Today, such and such a person goes to court saying that we will not accept it … The thing is also that they are already paid and the fact that you are going to court does not mean that the government will decide today that it will not have a budget for the office of the First Lady and the office of the Second Lady. Then we should close the office. So we should propose that it is no longer necessary to give an office to the First and Second Ladies, ” he expressed his disappointment.
He argued that “just as we pay their husbands, they must also be paid. If they work, then we have to pay them. ”
For him, it is mean for anyone to oppose wages.
” Love each other. Pettiness is too much, ” he advised.
