Six people were arrested for inserting a stick into the anus of a teenager in Agogo, northern Asante Akim district, Ashanti region.
The victim (name withheld) allegedly robbed an agrochemicals store in Agogo Market, owned by one of the suspects, Mr. Obeng Amoako, 79.
Agogo police arrested the six men, including Mr. Obeng Amoako, 79, who claims the boy broke into his store.
Others are; Prince Asadu, Kofi Bonti, all drivers aged 29 and 42, respectively, and Obeng Mensah, a 30-year-old porter.
The others are; Osei Bonsu, alias Assibey, 53, driver and farmer, 64, Boakye Danquah.
Konongo Divisional Police Commander Chief Superintendent Shaibu Abubakar Sadique-Osei, who called the teenager’s mistreatment barbaric, said police were looking for other suspects.
The 16-year-old boy writhes in pain on an emergency room bed at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital during a visit to the JoyNews team on Sunday afternoon.
The team got their hands on a video recording. The victim is heard screaming for help in the video, recorded by his captors.
His attackers tied his hands behind his back, stood on his neck while pressing him to the ground, face down.
Behind him were men who encouraged another, to stick a stick in the boy’s anus in front of a store in Agogo market at around 2:30 a.m.
The man seen in the video pushing the stick into the anus has been identified as Francis Obeng Amoako, owner of the agrochemicals store.
However, preliminary police investigations did not establish any break-ins, as the owner is seen opening his store in a video recording which was then released on social media platforms.
The victim was found in an unfinished building a day after the incident and sent to hospital.
Konongo’s division commander, Chief Superintendent Shaibu Abubakar Sadique-Osei, said their attention was drawn to a circulating video of the incident on WhatsApp.
“The police had information, that is to say on July 9, 2021, that a video was circulating on social networks, specifically WhatsApp. So they intercepted the video and realized that a minor was a victim in this video.
So quickly they got organized and then they took a good, hard look at the video to see if the incident happened at Agogo or not.
Fortunately, they realized that the incident had happened in Agogo. Police officers and women who watched the video were able to identify some of the guys in the video. This guy was tied up; both hands were tied behind him and were placed on the ground with the face turned to the ground.
So his pants were half taken off and I heard those who held him say to the old man that “killed no” in twi, that means put them in. And the old man also took the stick, whether it was a cane or whatever kind of stick, and started pushing it, pushing it. In fact, he pushed him to a point that I couldn’t look at him anymore and I have to stop looking at him ”.
Chief Superintendent Sadique-Osei condemned the number of people rendering judicial justice to their fellow citizens.
“What happened in the video is so bad. You don’t have the right to inflict instant justice on the person.
“Hand it over to the appropriate quarters, the police.” No matter how slow the system is, justice would certainly be served rather than taking the law in hand and then doing what we saw in this video, ”added Chief Superintendent Sadique-Osei.
He praised the public for the support which led to the arrest of the suspects.
Doctors at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital said the victim was in stable condition but was in pain.
Medical superintendent Dr William Nana Arhin Thompson said further checks would be carried out to determine the extent of damage to his internal organs.
“So far he’s stable, except he has a fever so he was given antibiotics. Tomorrow he would be sent to the theater and under anesthesia we would see if any part of the intestine or rectum or whatever was punctured.
The pain is such that he would not even allow you to examine the anus ”.
