AfCFTA Secretary General Wamkele Mene with the President of the African Shippers Council

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Shippers Council to facilitate the trade process in Ghana.
According to the secretary general of the AfCFTA, Wamkele Mene, this agreement will solve the problems related to the transport and customs clearance of goods at ports.
These challenges, he said, are slowing inter-African trade.
Speaking to reporters in Accra on Friday, July 9, Mene said: “The transportation of goods, customs clearance of goods by customs and customs procedures are very important factors in the implementation of this agreement. As the secretariat, we are not able to tackle these challenges alone, we will have to work with the private sector and that is why engagement and collaboration with the African Shippers Union Council is so important. “
Wamkele Mene said the new agreement between the Maritime Council will help the secretariat achieve its goals.
He also said that the AfcFTA has the potential to increase intra-African trade by 22% of total trade by 2023 as a result of this agreement.
The AfCFTA has a market of 1.3 billion people with a total gross domestic product (GDP) of $ 3.4 trillion.
The AfCFTA Secretary General urged African governments to sensitize their citizens, especially private companies, to the impact of AfCFTA on their businesses.
