Next year’s presidential elections in France will take place in April, with the first round on the 10th and the second round on the 24th, government spokesman Gabriel Attal said on Tuesday.

French presidents are elected for a five-year term in a two-round ballot, with the two candidates with the most votes in the first round competing in the second.

In the last vote in 2017, centrist Emmanuel Macron defeated far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Macron is expected to run for a second term, although he has yet to declare his candidacy.

Le Pen was re-elected president of the National Rally (RN) on July 4 and officially launched what will be her third attempt at the presidency.

The big right-wing party Les Républicains (LR) will be represented by the former Minister of Labor Xavier Bertrand.

He is expected to challenge Macron for the votes of the conservative moderates.

On the left, several candidates are vying for the post, including the leader of the far left party France Unbowed, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who has announced that he would make his third presidential candidacy, and several presidential candidates from the party of Greens.

The first round of the presidential election will take place during the spring school holidays, which were scheduled – depending on the region – between April 9 and May 9.
