When people around the world talk about the benefits of the cloud, it almost seems bizarre to learn that a company is abandoning some of its cloud storage services.
It was reported this week that Iron Mountain Digital, a company that has been in the cloud for just over a year, plans to completely phase out its online storage business by 2013.
No other major player in cloud storage has ever pulled out of the industry.
But it is not a complete retreat. Iron Mountain has reportedly informed its customers that it is only removing its core cloud storage solutions from Virtual File Store and Archive Service Platform.
This means that the company is not competing with big players like Amazon and Google for a share of the low-cost public cloud storage market, and instead allows it to focus on more specialized services.
Iron Mountain is a provider of document management and storage, including paper documents, scanning and scanning services, media shredding and destruction, and intellectual property management, among other services.
The company even stocks some of the world’s most valuable historical artifacts and cultural treasures.
