Tamale Central MP Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed asked his fellow National Democratic Congress (NDC) MP North Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa to return the two cars he bought with loan facilities to lawmakers if he is a person of principle.

He called Ablakwa’s position on the $ 28 million car loan for lawmakers hypocritical.

Ghana’s Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has submitted a $ 28 million loan agreement to parliament for approval pending review by the Finance Committee.

This involves the purchase of 275 vehicles for members of the 8th Parliament.

The ruling has divided opinions among members of the Ghanaian public and lawmakers themselves over whether or not this is a good move amid the severe economic hardships Ghanaians face.

Okudzeto Ablakwa revealed on Wednesday July 14 that he and some of his fellow lawmakers from all political backgrounds had made progress in getting parliament to reject the $ 28 million car loan facility for lawmakers.

He said he and his New Patriotic Party (NPP) colleague Patrick Boamah co-sponsored a private member’s motion that the Rt. Hon. The president is admitted for an emergency debate this week.

Mr Boamah, deputy chairman of Parliament’s finance committee, said in a previous interview that if he succeeds he will tell lawmakers to reject the facility.

“For me, if I have my way, I will tell my fellow MPs to reject this installation for the simple reason that all other weapons in government vehicles are bought from them without having to go through this process where the media are always on the back. deputies for having taken out a loan.

“I don’t see why we should be the subject of this public denigration,” he told reporters on Wednesday (July 7th).

Commenting on this development, Mr Murtala said: “I remember at the cafe he (Okudzeto Ablakwa) called me while he was standing with the contact person of one of the companies and he was talking to me. was wondering if I would take my car from this company, so what’s the point in that? “He had two cars and a new MP who arrives who does not even have a motorcycle, whose constituency is further away than his, whose constituency is larger than his, who must also assume his responsibilities by being mobile. , like a deputy. shouldn’t be given a car? Let’s be serious in this country.

“It’s not a principle. Then he should return the other two cars, ”he told Joy Prime on Thursday (July 15th).

He added: “Okudzeto is not just a fellow MP, he and I have come a very long way. He took out the loan twice. I went to Parliament with him at the same time he took out the car loan. In the Seventh Parliament, I was not there, but he took out the loan.
