Africa recorded a 43% increase in deaths from Covid-19 last week, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
“This is a clear warning sign that hospitals in the worst-affected countries are reaching a breaking point,” said Matshidiso Moeti, WHO director for Africa.
Many countries lack oxygen, intensive care units and specialized personnel.
Namibia, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda and Zambia are responsible for most of the deaths, the WHO said.
Medical staff have been advised to use dexamathasone, a steroid treatment, which can help critically ill patients recover faster.
The drug can reduce the risk of death by a third for patients on a ventilator and a fifth for those who need supplemental oxygen.
More than 150,000 deaths from Covid-19 have been reported in Africa since the start of the pandemic. This represents 4% of reported deaths worldwide.
