MP Land said he instructed the board of directors of the Eastern Regional Land Commission to use diplomacy and fairness to resolve land disputes in the region.
According to him, the land sector faces the challenges of conflicting research reports and double registrations, illegal and chainsaw mining operations, rapid property development without considering planning plans, and conflicts between customary owners as well as border disputes.
Mr. Owusu-Bio was speaking at the inauguration of a 39-member council of the Eastern Region Lands Commission in Koforidua.
Members of the newly constituted council will oversee land administration in the region.
He urged members to collaborate with other stakeholders to combat illegal mining, encroachment on public lands; chainsaw operations that destroyed the environment, large bodies of water, forest reserves and the interruption of public projects.
He said: “My ministry will support all efforts to eradicate these challenges. However, one of the major tasks of the Regional Land Commission will be to comply with the provisions of Article 270 of Law 1036.
The Deputy Minister urged the commission to develop an effective communication strategy to educate the public on the new 2020 Land Law (Law 1036).
Circuit Court judge Mercy Addei Kotei led board members to take an oath of allegiance and secrecy.
Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong said the inauguration of the council is a way of driving government policies.
According to him, the government intended to support the commission to deal with the challenges facing the land sector.
He described some of the interventions such as; transform the land commission into a true digital organization, ensure that land registration deadlines are reduced, free up surplus and underutilized land to stimulate economic development and reduce the housing deficit.
Mr. Kofi Osei Danquah, Chairman of the Board on behalf of the members, acknowledged the role the Region plays in land administration.
He believed that, for the effective implementation in the land administration system, the interest of the government should be a priority.
