An Accra circuit court sentenced a 29-year-old unemployed man to three months in prison to forced labor for forging a plaintiff’s signature and attempting to steal $ 800 from his Calbank account.
Eriyo Victor Andrian Abel admitted the offense and was sentenced accordingly.
However, he denied the charges of attempted theft and theft and prosecution was ordered by the court chaired by Mr. Emmanuel Essandoh to file an order to prove the charges against him.
Police Inspector Samuel Ahiabor told the court that Mr. Kwaku Bortsie, an electrical engineer, was the complainant in the case and a resident of Community 10, Tema.
He stated that the convict resided at Tip-Toe Lane, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and that on May 19, 2021, the complainant was traveling from Accra to Kumasi with his luggage containing 1,500.00 GHC, a laptop computer, an external reader and its charger, a Tecno phone charger, CalBank check books, receipts, invoices, DVLA cover notes, free cards, among other documents.
Inspector Ahiabor said the complainant boarded a VIP bus and that a few minutes before take off he detected his missing luggage. He therefore filed a complaint with the police and his bank.
The prosecution said that on May 31, 2021, at around 1 p.m., the bank manager of the bank’s Ring Road branch, where he rescued, arrested and sent to the police, Abel forged the complainant’s signature on the ‘one of his check slips and attempted to withdraw $ 800 from his account.
A search carried out on him revealed all other documents belonging to Mr. Bortsie. He then admitted to forging his signature in his warning statement, but ignored the laptop, external drive and GHC1,500.00.
