LONDON (AP) – The England Football Association has commissioned an independent study to investigate the “shameful scenes” in the national team’s shootout loss to Italy in the Championship final Europe at Wembley.
The FA said on Monday it had informed the Department of Digital Culture, Media and Sports (DCMS) of the review and pledged to identify those responsible for the issues that arose before and during the match.
“We are determined to fully understand what happened outside and then inside Wembley Stadium during the UEFA Euro 2020 final on Sunday 11 July,” the FA said in a statement. “We informed DCMS this weekend that an independent review led by Baroness Casey of Blackstock had been commissioned to report on the facts and circumstances involved.
“It will be addressed to all parties concerned and will include external experts. One of the main goals of the conclusions will be to ensure that lessons are learned and that such shameful scenes can never be repeated. “
The unrest erupted ahead of the final as dozens of ticketless fans crept into the stadium, while there were also ugly scenes in the stands during the match.
Police have released CCTV footage of those they want to question.
“We continue to work with the relevant authorities to support their efforts to identify those responsible and hold them to account,” the FA statement said.
England lost 3-2 on penalties after extra time failed to separate the sides, with Leonardo Bonucci calling off Luke Shaw’s opener for the home side.
England trio Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who had missed the point, were subsequently victims of racist abuse on social media platforms.
The behavior of those who broke into Wembley and trolls online has been widely condemned and has cast a veil over hopes of success for a joint UK-Irish proposal to host the final of the 2030 World Cup.
