A former Chief of the Defense Staff, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, attributed the massive influx of young people for military recruitment to the high unemployment rate in the country.
He believes this could have dangerous implications for the quality of military personnel.
“There are no jobs for young people, so whatever work is available they are looking for it not because they want to serve the nation in that capacity, but because they are unemployed and hungry. . ”
“It’s a very dangerous thing because when you do that you don’t get quality people to serve the nation in the police or the military,” Nunoo-Mensah said.
On Monday, thousands of Ghanaians invaded the El Wak sports stadium in Accra to participate in a documentation and medical selection process for recruitment into the Ghanaian armed forces.
This has been the trend for a few years now.
As early as 4 a.m., the candidates started a queue that stretched for more than four kilometers.
This was after the Ghanaian armed forces announced to the public that a recruitment exercise had started in May.
The army is expected to recruit some 1,000 people from among the candidates in the Greater Accra region.
