Ghana Health Services (GHS) has announced that it will come forward with funeral proposals soon as the service develops a strategy to prevent a possible third wave of Covid-19.
Director-General Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye said funeral protocols, like all other protocols, are not being followed, hence the drafting of the new proposal.
“Within the protocols that were designed, including how the funeral is to be organized and just like the protocols, I think it was not followed not only by a group of people but clearly by many people. “, did he declare.
He made the announcement following a 2-day high-level strategic meeting on Covid-19 in Kumasi.
According to him, the new proposal will examine how to prevent the spread of Covid-19 during funerals.
“We’re discussing a proposal that limits the spread, that makes it safer and while people continue to have funerals, we have funerals, we think it’s such a deeply cultural thing that it’s not something you can just wish away and so we have a draft protocol that we share to make sure our funeral is safe, ”he said.
Dr Kuma-Aboagye, who spoke about Ghana’s performance in handling Covid-19, warned the country was at risk of a third wave if citizens’ attitudes remained the same.
“There has been a gradual increase in cases over the past few weeks, for example between April 11 and 25, 2021, a total of 968 cases were recorded for the 2 week period compared to 2,500 recorded from July 1 to 14, 2021 .
“The increase in the number of cases is of concern to GHS and it has necessitated this strategic meeting of senior management and our partners to deal with the increase in these cases. Ladies and Gentlemen, our current system has inherent strengths,… but all these capacities can be exceeded if we do not avoid a third wave, notably carried by a Delta variant which is highly transmissible, ”he said.
